Mutual Fund Tax Clienteles

چکیده

Mutual funds are held by investors in taxable and tax-qualified retirement accounts. We investigate whether the characteristics, investment strategies, and performance of mutual funds held by these diverse tax clienteles differ. Examining both mutual fund distributions and mutual fund holdings, we find that funds held primarily by taxable investors choose investment strategies that result in lower tax burdens than funds held primarily in tax-qualified accounts. Despite these differences, we find no evidence that any investment constraints that may arise from these tax-efficient investment strategies result in performance differences between funds held by different tax clienteles. *Clemens Sialm is at the University of Texas at Austin and NBER. Investor reaction to mutual fund performance conditions the behavior of mutual fund managers and fund complexes and thus has widely reaching ramifications for the trading of assets worldwide. In particular, the mutual funds literature has long argued that convexity in the money flow-performance relation influences risk-taking by funds. They also tend to invest a disproportionate amount in funds with no minimum-balance requirements, and find fewer funds and (fewer n...

The first strategy, ‘defer stocks first,’ gives priority to holding equity mutual funds in a saver’s tax-deferred account, while the second...

Mutual fund performance, management behavior, and investor costs

Potential capital gains exposure and tax cost ratio are positively related to return. For fixed income funds, trading activity is positively related to return. Expense ratios and tax cost ratios are negatively related t...

First, consistent with tax motivations, individual investors are reluctant to sell mutual funds that have appreciated in value and are willing to sell losing funds. Second, individuals pay attention to investment costs as redemption decisions are sensitive to both exp...
